23 Progressions – Flamenco Guitar: the Book to Take Your Chord Vocabulary Further

If you’ve been playing flamenco guitar for a while, you’ve probably noticed that there’s a gap between knowing your chords and actually sounding like flamenco. That gap is usually filled by flamenco guitar progressions — the chord sequences that define each palo, create the modal sound that makes flamenco so distinctive, and give you the raw material to improvise, accompany cante, or compose your own music.

This book brings together 23 progressions from the flamenco repertoire, each one with full tablature, musical context and practice exercises. Not theory for theory’s sake — these are real progressions you’ll actually encounter when you study flamenco. 50 pages, A4 format, spiral binding so the book stays flat on your music stand while you play. Available as a PDF, physical book, or physical book plus video course.

What’s inside: 23 Flamenco Guitar Progressions with Tablature

The book is organized so each progression makes musical sense, not just as a finger exercise:

  • 23 chord progressions from the flamenco repertoire, covering different palos and tonalities
  • Full tablature for each progression — no music reading required
  • Musical context: which palo it belongs to, what makes it work harmonically, where you’d use it
  • Practice exercises: how to work each progression until it becomes second nature, not just something you know in your head
  • Progressive difficulty: from straightforward sequences to more complex combinations

The progressions span a wide range of harmonic colors — from the iconic Andalusian cadence to Phrygian-based sequences and modal progressions in different minor keys. The goal isn’t to memorize 23 things. The goal is to internalize how flamenco harmony moves — so you can start making decisions of your own when you play.

Who is this book for

For intermediate flamenco guitarists who already know the basic chords and want to take the next step. If you can play through a few palos and you’re starting to think about improvisation, accompaniment or composition, working through these progressions will open a lot of doors.

It’s also very useful for flamenco guitar teachers who need structured material in English for their international students. Good English-language flamenco resources are genuinely hard to find — this book was partly created because so many students and teachers asked for it.

The detail that makes a difference: spiral binding

All books in this collection use spiral binding for a simple reason: they’re designed to be used while you play. Spiral binding means the book opens completely flat on your music stand and stays there — no weights needed, no half-closed pages to fight with. If you’ve ever tried to study from a book that kept closing itself, you already understand why this matters.

This book is in English

The explanations, musical context and practice notes are all written in English. The tablature is, of course, universal — but having the text in English makes a real difference when you’re trying to understand what you’re playing and why, not just copy fingering from a diagram.

If you prefer the Spanish edition, the original book — 23 Progresiones de Guitarra Flamenca — covers the same material with explanations in Spanish.

About the author: Pedro Vázquez

Pedro Vázquez has been teaching flamenco guitar for over 15 years. He started playing at 12, like most people do — without much guidance, figuring things out as he went. That turned out to be useful: he knows first-hand every mistake students make when they learn without a clear map, because he made them all himself.

In 2021 he founded Aprendeguitarra.es, an online flamenco guitar academy based in Andalusia with over 1,500 students, 50+ courses and nearly 900 recorded lessons. He’s been recognized among the 50 most innovative companies in Andalusia and was a finalist in the Premios Emprendemos awards in 2025 and 2026. These books are, in his own words, «the ones I wish I’d had when I started.»

Frequently asked questions about flamenco guitar progressions

What exactly is a flamenco guitar progression?

A flamenco progression is a chord sequence that repeats to create the harmonic foundation of a piece or palo. Flamenco progressions have a characteristic modal, cyclical quality — they don’t resolve the way pop or jazz chords do. The Andalusian cadence (A – G – F – E in its most common form) is the most recognizable example. This book gives you 23 of them, with tablature and context.

Do I need to read music to use this book?

No. The book uses tablature throughout, which shows you exactly where to put your fingers without requiring any music reading. The explanations are in plain English.

What level do I need to be to use this book?

Intermediate. If you can already place the basic flamenco chords and have some fluency with chord changes, you can work through most of the progressions in the book. There’s a range of difficulty, from straightforward sequences to more complex combinations.

What’s the difference between the PDF and the physical book?

The physical book arrives spiral-bound and opens flat on your music stand. The PDF is a digital download you can use on a tablet or print. If you buy the physical book, the PDF is included as a free bonus.

Is there a video course available in English?

The Book + Video Course bundle includes the physical book plus access to the online video course. The video lessons are in Spanish. If you need English subtitles or an English-language video course, contact us through the website to ask about available options.

Can I order the physical book outside Spain?

Physical book shipping is currently available within Peninsular Spain. If you’re outside Spain, please contact us via WhatsApp before ordering to check international shipping options. The PDF downloads worldwide immediately after purchase.
